The Afiya Center is unique in that it is one of the very few non-profit reproductive justice organizations in North Texas founded and directed by women of color. The Afiya Center is committed to creating an atmosphere where women’s experiences are the focal point. The Afiya Center addresses the unique needs of women by educating and advocating around policies that directly impact the lives of women. In addition, we place a special emphasis on the experiences of marginalized women affected by HIV/AIDS and poverty. While many may not be familiar with the term, reproductive justice, The Afiya Center, since its inception, swiftly identified the sexual health and reproductive justice framework as effective means to challenge structural power inequalities.
Over the years, The Afiya Center has been successful in creating positive change in women’s lives through the creation of microeconomic projects that are designed to promote entrepreneur enterprise and improve the health outcomes for women living with HIV/AIDS living at or below the federal poverty level. The Afiya Center’s goal is to end reproductive oppression and encourage and support women to take ownership of their reproductive welness by transforming the management of their health to one that increases self-efficacy and promotes wholeness.
Moreover, The Afiya Center aims to end the cycle of disease and poverty disparities among marginalized women through re-education, leadership development, and advocacy. By supporting the empowerment of these women and equipping them with tools to generate wealth, they are able to transform their lives and lives of those within the communities they serve.
